The Slow Build Artist’s New Feature

Our friend Ashley Dean, also known as Broken Pixel, has held a gala screening of his new film at Leeds’ East Street Arts’ Patrick Galleries.

Ashley worked with us on the video for The Slow Build about 18 months ago, contributing the wonderful stop-animation sections. We met up a handful of times to discuss what we were planning to do, all very low key. Then he turned up a couple of weeks later with his superbly detailed animation, quite enigmatic and characteristically humble. Jog your memory below:

Now Ashley has spent the best part of the last 18 months putting together this new project which I’m pleased to say is glorious, moving and quite beautiful.
It’s a 50-minute movie to accompany his band iLiKETRAiNS debut album, Elegies to Lessons Learned.

It’s largely filmed in his trademark classic, painstaking stop-animation and compliments the band’s tender cataloguing of historical figures and events by reviving period characters and telling their stories. There’s a narrative which brings all the tales together, hinging around the single Spencer Percival, but I won’t reveal more because a there’s a lot of joy to be had following the journey.

Ashley tells me TRAiNS label Beggars Banquet are thinking of putting it out on DVD sometime in the Spring. Look forward to it. In the meantime, have a listen to some of the album at iLiKETRAiNS myspace.
